​​​​​James (Jim) Erwin is a consulting electrical engineer for Open Range® Engineering Services, PLLC, located in Pampa, Texas.  Having 40 years of experience in the utility and petro-chemical industries, Jim’s expertise includes, electrical design, electrical maintenance, electrical safety and performing system power studies, particularly arc flash studies.  Jim is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and also holds a Master Electrician’s license in the State of Texas.

  • Provided electrical technical support to world-wide plant sites – this included engineering and maintenance support
  • Performed Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) reviews of plant site electrical systems
  • Authored reliability best practices and reliability maintenance templates for enhancing plant site reliability
  • Assisted energy procurement group with procurement of site electricity contracts
  • Assisted energy procurement group with electrical commercial/regulatory issues, such as: Electric Reliability Council of TX (ERCOT), Public Utility Commission of TX (PUCT), Transmission Distribution Service Provider (TDSP), etc.....
  • Assisted capital projects group with review of electrical capital projects
  • Authored and  managed corporate electrical Standard Engineering Practices (SEPs)
  • Authored and managed corporate electrical safety Standard Work Practice (SWP) – also referred to as Corporate Electrical Safety Policy
  • Performed plant site power system studies using electrical engineering software –  this included performing arc flash studies based upon requirements of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) 1584
  • Led corporate effort to enhance site equipment and system reliability.  Examples are: uninterruptible power supply (UPS) reliability and replacement of obsolete units; development of lightning protection/grounding plans, substation/distribution system upgrades
  • Conducted training classes for site electrical personnel in order to introduce them to electrical safety, especially as it relates to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E.
  • Past member of Process Industry Practices (PIP) Electrical Function Team (EFT) which developed and published electrical process industry design practices
  • Past member of TX Industrial Energy Consumers (TIEC) which helped develop industrial electric deregulation guidelines for state of TX
  • Member of NFPA 70 Code Panels for 2005 and 2008 National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Proficient in the use of ETAP and SKM electrical engineering software used for system power studies.
